What is Faux Finish?
Faux Finish techniques are a great way to create an atmosphere in a room. BLEND and GLAZE is a semi-translucent glazing and blending medium used to create faux finishes and decorative painting techniques. Easily create the illusion of natural materials such as wood, marble, and granite or fantasy finishes like sponging, rag rolling, or dragging.
General Tips
- Always prepare the surface properly before decorating ( see Surface Preparation)
- Try experimenting first on sample boards
- Work in small sections. Complete one wall or section, stopping in a corner or natural break
- Work quickly and complete each section before the glaxe becomes tacky, about 10 - 15 minutes. When doing negative applications, leave a thick wet edge of unworked glaze at the end of each section to allow blending of the next section.
- Use protective gloves when glazing for easy clean-up
- Always use lint-free rags. Flannel, diapers, cheesecloth or sheets work well.

Choosing the color
- The easiest way to choose colors is by using the take home color strips available at your local paint store
- Select colors that compliment your furniture, window treatments, carpet or wallpaper to coordinate the look of your room
- Since finishing with BLEND & GLAZE is a process that consists of layering different translucent colors over a base coat, you should choose colors that are in the same color family to achieve the best results.
- The color you apply last will be most predominant. Start with the color you want to see least and end with the color you want to see most.
- Color strips are usually arranged in shades from light to dark. You will usually choose a light color for a base coat. Your glaze color(s) should be two or three shades deeper than the base coat. For a softer, frosted effect, you can reverse this by selecting a dark base coat and the glaze color(s) two to three shades lighter.

Surface Preparation
- A completely sealed surface is important for successful decorative painting. Fill all cracks, holes, depressions, etc. with Patch Spackling Compound Prime and seal with a Primer Sealer, or another primer of your choice. Apply a base coat of any interior satin or semi-gloss (do not use flats) alkyd (oil-based) or latex paint in a color of your choice and allow to dry overnight.
- Once the base coat has dried, mask off any areas not to be decorated(glazed) using a low tack painter's tape. Remove the tape immediately after the last glazing step.

Mixing the Glaze
- Blend and Glaze Decorating Painting Liquid is available in either alkyd (oil-based) formula or in a latex version. Both are excellent for any decorative painting project Alkyd formula offers exceptional transparency and lends a rich glow to painted surfaces. The alkyd formula also offers somewhat longer working (open)time, which you may need when attempuing negative applications on large surfaces like waals. Latex BLEND & GLAZE produces fresh pure color, has liitle odor and cleans up with just soap and water. If you prefer to use the latex formula, you can extend its already long working time by adding BLEND & GLAZE Extender. The Extender is also used to further enhance the blending of colors. For a more translucent finish, add more BLEND & GLAZE. For a more opaque look, use more paint.
- Make sure you have enough glaze mixed to complete the entire job. It may be difficult to mix the exact color if you should run out. If you do run out, stop in a corner or natural break

Protecting the Faux Finish
- A Blend and Glaze is washable and durable. However, for added protection, luster and depth on furniture, doors, trim, floors and craft items, topcoat with a water or oil-based polyurethane, varnish or BULLS EYE SHELLAC.
- It is not necessary to top coat walls or ceilings. Allow 48 hours dry time before applying top coat.
